Image size cheat sheet
Use this as a practical starting point before resizing, cropping, converting, or compressing images. The best size is the smallest image that still looks sharp at its real display size.
Website images
| Use case | Recommended size | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hero image | 1600×900 or 1920×1080 | WebP/JPG | Use 16:9, keep text out of the image when possible, compress to 75–85%. |
| Blog inline image | 800–1200px wide | WebP/JPG | Match the content column width instead of uploading full camera resolution. |
| Open Graph preview | 1200×630 | JPG/WebP | Keep the focal point centered; social crops can trim the edges. |
| Logo with transparency | 2× display size | PNG/SVG | PNG is fine for raster logos, but SVG is better when available. |
| Favicon | 32×32 plus 180×180 | PNG/ICO/SVG | Export multiple sizes for browser tabs and Apple touch icons. |
Social media
| Use case | Recommended size | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram square | 1080×1080 | JPG/WebP | Best all-purpose crop for profile grids and reusable campaign assets. |
| Instagram/Reels/TikTok story | 1080×1920 | JPG/WebP | Keep important content away from top and bottom UI overlays. |
| Facebook / LinkedIn link preview | 1200×630 | JPG/WebP | Use high contrast because previews are often viewed small. |
| YouTube thumbnail | 1280×720 | JPG/PNG | Use large text and faces/products near the center. |
| Pinterest pin | 1000×1500 | JPG/WebP | A 2:3 vertical crop usually performs best. |
Email and documents
| Use case | Recommended size | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newsletter header | 1200×400 to 1600×600 | JPG/WebP | Keep file size under 300KB when possible for deliverability and quick loading. |
| Inline email image | 600–800px wide | JPG/PNG | Most email templates render around 600px wide on desktop. |
| Screenshot attachment | Native or 1200px wide | PNG | PNG keeps interface text sharp; crop private data before sharing. |
| PDF export image | 150–300 DPI target | JPG/PNG | Use higher quality for print, lower quality for screen-only PDFs. |
Ecommerce and marketplaces
| Use case | Recommended size | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main product image | 1200×1200 or 1600×1600 | JPG/WebP | Square crops are safest across catalogs, ads, and marketplace thumbnails. |
| Lifestyle image | 1600×1200 or 1920×1080 | JPG/WebP | Use wider crops when the environment helps sell the product. |
| Transparent product cutout | 1200×1200 | PNG/WebP | Use PNG for maximum compatibility when transparency matters. |
| Thumbnail | 400×400 to 600×600 | WebP/JPG | Small thumbnails can be compressed more aggressively than zoom images. |
Resize to exact dimensions

Crop for composition
Create square, vertical, landscape, and custom aspect-ratio crops.
Compress after resizing
Reduce file size after dimensions are correct for the biggest quality win.
